Air rifle shooters practice for competition

Zach Nicolella practices air rile shooting from the ground at the
Civilian Marksmanship Program’s Regional Competition.

A group of steel-city kids visited Camp Perry with the hope of capturing a regional championship in air rifle shooting.

The competition will be stiff over the weekend at the Civilian Marksmanship Program as hundreds of shooters vie for a shot to reach the national competition.

Hailing from the greater Pittsburgh area, Joe Grabowski and his team of nine sharp-shooters came to Camp Perry with one goal in mind: to win a national championship like they did in 2013. "This is our third year shooting. Last year we came up short," he said.

With a laser-focus, the team practices for hours to perfect their craft. Grabowski said in order to compete, team members need to practice two to three times each week.

On Thursday, practice was inside the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center. Grabowski said the Camp Perry facility is one of the biggest shooting centers in the country.

He said practice the day before a weekend competition is integral to getting familiar with the range.

Luke Knollinger, a shooter for team Frazier Simplex in Pennsylvania, aims for a target during practice
at the CMP Regional Championship at Camp Perry.

"It's extremely important for first-time shooters," he said about practicing in the same facility as the competition. "Practice gets that nervousness out."

A veteran shooter, Christopher Thomas, 18, uses his practice time to work on his technique. "I try to fix my position," he said while he shoots from various target heights.

John Paul Grabowski, 17, said the hour practice at the shooting range allows him to try new things and make sure he not varying from his routine. "I work on my natural aim and try to keep everything the same," he said."

First year shooter Rebecca Spencer used practice time to get used to the large space at the shooting range. She practiced different target heights to prepare for competition.

Junior Olympic PA State Championships

The 2015 Pennsylvania Junior Olympic State Championships concluded on Sunday, January 4th at the Jerome Sportsmans Club. Nearly 100 juniors competed this year vying to become the State Champion. Only one boy or girl can be crowned State Champion for Smallbore and Air Rifle, but everyone can shoot to achieve the minimum cut score and be automatically qualified to receive and invitation to the National Championships to be held at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, Colorado in April.

Of the four boys and four girls that competed in this competition from Frazier Simplex, Cassidy Fairman was the only one to achieve the minimum cut score with a 566 in smallbore (565 was the minimum). The other competitors will have to wait and see if they will be invited.

Frazier foursome at the Dixie Double

Four of Frazier Simplex's junior shooters traveled to Anniston, Alabama for the annual Dixie Double. This was a two day, international air rifle competition where each competitor shoots 60 shots offhand each of the two days. Because they use decimal scoring for this type of competition, a perfect score is a 654. The best competitors shoot in the 610 to the 625 range. Also different in this competition is how the final is run. In this final, every competitor that qualifies will start out at zero, making it easier for even the last place qualifier to win the competition.
Representing Frazier Simplex was, Christopher Thomas, Thomas Welch, Mackenzie Wagner and John Paul Grabowski. Many of them shot their personal best during this competition.
