Frazier foursome at the Dixie Double

Four of Frazier Simplex's junior shooters traveled to Anniston, Alabama for the annual Dixie Double. This was a two day, international air rifle competition where each competitor shoots 60 shots offhand each of the two days. Because they use decimal scoring for this type of competition, a perfect score is a 654. The best competitors shoot in the 610 to the 625 range. Also different in this competition is how the final is run. In this final, every competitor that qualifies will start out at zero, making it easier for even the last place qualifier to win the competition.
Representing Frazier Simplex was, Christopher Thomas, Thomas Welch, Mackenzie Wagner and John Paul Grabowski. Many of them shot their personal best during this competition.

WVU Mountaineer Open - Many PR's made that day

The WVU Mountaineer Open is always a favorite match for the junior competitors of Frazier Simplex to participate in. Even some of the seniors compete in this first-class competition from time to time. Some of the best juniors in this sport, from all over the region, came to shoot in this year's competition.
As for personal records (PR's), many of our junior competitors fired their personal best during this match. Congratulations to all of those competitors that fired their personal records. They are recognized with an * by their score.

PA State 4-H Shooting Competitors bring home medals at the 2014 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational

The Frazier-Simplex 4-H members representing Pennsylvania at the 2014 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS INVITATIONAL held in Grand Island, Nebraska, last week brought home gold, silver and bronze medals for their efforts.  Five hundred and four 4-H members participated in the annual shooting event in nine disciplines, air rifle, air pistol, archery re-curve and compound bow, hunting skills, shotgun, muzzle-loading rifle, small-bore pistol and rifle.

L to R: Morgan Duerr, Thomas Welch, Ashlee Hobgood and Sylvia Dreistadt

Nine boys and girls from Pennsylvania participated in the air pistol, archery, air rifle and small-bore rifle events.  The local competitors from the Frazier-Simplex 4-H Rifle Club demonstrated their skills by winning medals in three different disciplines.

Morgan Duerr from Weirton Madonna High School started the winning ways by taking the Silver Medal in the Silhouette competition scoring 24 hits, the gold medal winner scored 29 hits. She continued demonstrating her shooting skills in CMP rapid and slow fire the second day with an 11th place and then placing 4th the third day in NRA 3 Position.  Her strong three day showing earned her the Silver Medal in the overall standings for the National event.  She missed the Gold Medal by .003 points.

In the small-bore rifle event, Thomas Welch from Mohawk High School, led the whole field with a 532 and won his first national Gold Medal.  Thomas also had a very strong showing in the CMP rapid and slow fire competitions.

Sylvia Dreistadt, an Avella High School graduate and a Pitt Student, returned to her 3rd National Shooting Sports Invitational and won the Bronze Medal in the air pistol silhouette competition by scoring 31 hits out of 40 targets.  Sixty 4-H members were in the event.  Sylvia had in previous years participated in the small-bore rifle and air rifle events.

Ashlee Hobgood, a Trinity High School Academy Student demonstrated strong shooting skills by averaging 18th place over the three day event.  There were 70 competitors in her shooting disciplines.

Two Frazier Simplex seniors moving on to NCAA Collegiate shooting this fall

Two of those smiling faces frequently seen around the club on any night, and plenty of weekends, are joining ranks with the TCU Horned Frogs. Yes, that's right! Ariana and Nicholle (seen below) are both heading to the heat of Fort Worth, Texas in August to become athletes in one of the NCAA's most prestigious rifle teams in the country, the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs.

Both girls will be joining the collegiate team that has put forth some of the best competitive rifle shooters in the world; most recently, Sarah Scherer, Erin Lorenzen, and Sarah Beard.

We wish them the best of luck in pursuit of their education and shooting goals, and we will miss having their smiling faces around the club and our homes.

PA Junior Intermediate Smallbore Rifle Camp

June 18—22, 2014
The Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association and a grant from Friends of the NRA will support the state wide, 3 position summer camp program.  This camp is intended for intermediate level junior shooters, who have shooting experience and would like to grow as a marksman.  The facilities of Indiana University of Pennsylvania will be used for housing and dining and the indoor rifle range is located at the Indiana County Fairgrounds.  The camp capacity  is 20 junior shooters, ages 13 to 17 and will be held June 18 – 22, 2014.  All shooting is with .22 cal. target rifles, on a 50’ indoor rifle range.

A variety of shooting exercises and events make up the program. The SCATT system is used to analyze the natural point of aim of a shooter so proper alterations to positions can be made.  The goal of this camp is to expand and advance the shooting levels of the junior shooters attending.  We encourage junior shooters who are interested it participating and competing in higher levels of competition to attend.  In addition to the coaching from our volunteer staff, juniors have the opportunity to meet others with similar interests and abilities.

Camp registration fee is $200. The fee, along with an NRA Foundation Grant and support from the Penna. Rifle & Pistol Association, provides the campers with dormitory rooms, meals, transportation on campus, and related marksmanship materials.  All applications will be reviewed and 20 shooters will be selected.  Final deadline for submission of applications is March 15, 2014.  Please call or email Julie Vavreck to receive an application at 814-602-5889 or pajr.rifle@gmail.com

Juniors compete in the first American Legion postal match for 2014

Sporter and Precision competitors from the Frazier Simplex Junior Rifle Club competed Friday night in the first postal match to pre-qualify for the 2014 American Legion National Rifle Championships to be held this summer at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Three competitors decided to shot the Sporter style rifle (a rifle closely resembling one that you purchase at a sporting goods store), while eight of the competitors fired in the Precision style rifle class (the type used in the Olympic games).

Pictured above are the junior competitors with the representatives from American Legion Post 175 in Washington, PA. Back Row, L to R, Post Commander, Matt Lovre (P)recision, Kiboh Uchida (P), Noah Boltz (S)porter, Morgan Duerr (S), Mackenzie Wagner (S), Post Commander. Front Row, L to R, Christoper Thomas (P), Tommy Welch (P), Nicholle Benedict (P), Ariana Grabowski (P). Two Precision competitors not pictured, yet competed are: Luke Knollinger and Sarah Sroka.

Last year, nearly 3,000 competitors from across the nation competed in this first American Legion competition. If this year is the same, then the top 10% will be given the opportunity to compete in the second match to qualify for the National Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this summer. Fifteen of the Nation's best competitors for both Sporter and Precision will be invited to attend this competition. The American Legion covers most if not all of their expenses.

In 2006, Frazier Simplex's Tommy Santelli won the National Championship and in 2013, Ariana Grabowski from took 4th place at the Nationals.
